Larmandier-Bernier has just won “Best Champagne” in The Age/Sydney Morning Herald “Uncorked” Wine Guide for its Brut Tradition. This is arguably the most significant accolade that a Champagne can receive in Australia and it is particularly significant as it is the first time, as far as we are aware, that a grower Champagne (i.e. a small house that owns all of its vineyards) has won “Best Champagne”. It is certainly the first time a biodynamic Champagne has done so.
In a region infamous for high yields and industrial viticulture, only those very few producers who manage their own vineyards can ensure the highest level of quality (assuming this is their intention). Larmandier-Bernier is one of those few. By paying fanatical attention to detail in their vineyards and keeping vine yields crushingly low, Pierre and Sophie Larmandier craft a striking Champagne that reflects the nuances of the land and climate in its flavour.
