History credits Dom Pierre Perignon with creating champagne at Hautvilliers during the reign of Louis XIV. His innovation was to bottle his wine in strong glass bottles and replace the traditional oil-soaked hemp stopper with a more modern and effective seal: cork. Exclusive and closely associated with social status, Dom Perignon's "sparkling champaign" sold for more than four times the average price of wine in Champagne!
In 1935 Dom Perignon champagne became the world's first Prestige Cuvee champagne. 100 cases of the 1921 vintage were marketed in the USA as an antidote to depression and facism, and in the UK selected clients of Moet's distributor - Simon Brothers - received two bottles each of the 1926 vintage. Until 1947 is was only available for sale in the USA, and only in exceptional years. Originally owned by Champagne Mercier (it was a wedding gift on the marriage of Francine Durand-Mercier to Paul Chandon Moet in 1927), Dom Perignon is now a stand alone brand within the LVMH family of luxury goods.
Dom Perignon champagne is aged a minimum six years before release. You can age it another six years with confidence to achieve the classic harmonious yin/yang Dom Perignon style: a complete balance bewteen youthful and mature characters.
